Food Technology Excursion to Heronswood

On Wednesday 26th October, the Year 9/10G Food Technology class visited the beautiful gardens of Heronswood at Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula.

Heronswood is home of the Diggers Club, an organisation dedicated to the conservation of heritage food plants and their propagation. After an introduction by the staff, a very pleasant hour was spent touring the gardens which have a stunning backdrop of views of Port Philip Bay. The students then enjoyed a morning tea of organic food grown on the property The restaurant is located in the stately heritage home at the centre of the gardens.

During the visit students, discovered much about edible plants (including flowers!) and discussed food security as well as the importance of maintaining genetic diversity in plant communities. This tied in very well with their science studies and also broadened their understanding of the science and politics involved with food growing.

Music

What a great year we have had so far in music electives.

The girls have been learning how to read music, write music and record music. The time has passed so quickly and I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching this elective and I think the girls have enjoyed it too. This term's focus with electives has been performance. The girls have been working very hard to learn their parts and we hope to perform it to the primary students towards the end of the term.

Music club

A few secondary girls come to the secondary music club, there is a lot more room for more girls to come. I am happy to help you learn how to play the instrument of your choice or let you play the instruments without assistance the choice is yours. I do hope more girls will utilise this opportunity to learn and play music and if the boys show interest in the club I would be happy to open a secondary boy's music club too.

Year 7 Creative Writing Excursion to the Mornington Peninsula

The Year 7 Girls and Boys had a highly enjoyable day out and about on the Mornington Peninsula on Thursday 20th October. They spent time wandering the laneways of Red Hill, observing and documenting nature at the Dairy in Main Ridge, enjoying the vista from the Arthurs Seat Lookout and exploring Main Street Mornington, including time on the foreshore and at the Marina.

At each stop of the bus, they had specific activities to complete, helping them to develop skills of writing description, imagining a plot, using the five senses in their writing and creating dialogue. The weather was definitely on our side, and everyone had a marvellous time!

Rugby Clinic

To complement their study of the film, 'Remember the Titans', The KBC Year 8 Girls and Boys participated in a Rugby Clinic held by the Melbourne Rebels.

Although Rugby Union is not the same game as the American football which features in the film, the students were given some good insight into the physicality of the sport of rugby.

'Left side. Strong side.'
'What's pain? French Bread.'
'Water makes you weak!'

Student Accounts

During the excursion, I found out that rugby is a sport that revolves around teamwork and concentration. Two teams focus their heart and soul into taking over their opposition. Passing the ball to their comrades, the two teams demonstrate their skill in working together to overwhelm their foes. Without proper effort and cooperation, a team will be vanquished. This sport determines which team is superior in teamwork.
